Happy Boy Springs Into Action

Happy Boy Farms is truly springing into action now. With every passing day, the hours of sunlight are lengthening and this means it is time to plant. For farmers, Spring is a time of great planning, plotting and planting. Since the wintertime we have been making decisions about what to grow for you all this upcoming season as we talked amongst each other, devoted customers and wholesale buyers about what heirloom tomatoes, melons or other favorites they wished to see again this year. No two years are the same as we always are tinkering with our seed choices, determining what goes where and when.

 
With a limited land base, we have to be fairly judicious since these crops take up a lot of space and take time to grow. It’s hard to imagine, but the melons, tomatoes, peppers, and squash that you are hungry for have just recently been seeded and transplanted. That means you will be drooling with anticipation for many weeks before they finally fruit and ripen. It’s a long time to wait but oh so worth it!
 
Right now, our greenhouses are currently packed with all sorts of young seedlings that have been sown over the past weeks and very soon many of these tiny plants will be transplanted into prepared beds in our fields. Each of our fields have a set of unique characteristics; soil structure, p.h. as well as individual micro climates that can all determine what crops will thrive or struggle. Every passing season we learn a little bit more and just when we think we are getting the hang of it, Mother Nature throws us another curve ball and we’re back to the drawing board.
